During National Apprenticeship Week, I wanted to share my view on apprenticeships and some of the work we are doing at Remploy to help young people move into apprenticeships.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

As a young person, you may find it difficult to compete against others during the standard recruitment process, due to a lack of experience. An apprenticeship is a great way to start out in a career that you’re truly passionate about. It allows you to ‘learn whilst you earn’, gain valuable work experience and establish yourself in a company as a truly valued employee.

Finding an apprenticeship opportunity

At our Chester and Warrington branches we have been helping young people to find and secure suitable apprenticeships to kick start their career.

Through regular apprenticeship information sessions, candidates have the opportunity to find out more about what an apprenticeship can offer and also get screened to find suitable positions. Last month’s session was attended by another ten people, armed with CV’s, lists of companies they’d like to approach and the enthusiasm to work towards a qualification, we have our next cohort of apprentices waiting in the wings.

We work closely with local training providers to match up talented young people with employers, as well as receive regular visits from recruiters who want to speak to candidates on a one-to-one basis to get to know them and what they can do.

Start your career on the right track

So far, we have had great success in finding suitable apprenticeships. Especially for one of our candidates who was very keen to become a hair stylist. Following a highly impressive four week placement at a local hair salon, they offered her an apprenticeship and a chance to begin employment in her dream career. Feedback from both her and her supervisors is very encouraging and is testimony to the hard work that she puts in on a daily basis. I am sure that this is due to the fact she loves the job and everything she is learning within the academy alongside it. She just needed the opportunity to show an employer what she was capable of and what a great employee she could be.

With such a wide range of different apprenticeships available, you can find a career that is right for you.

From personal experience, having gained an apprenticeship whilst at Remploy, I can say that it benefits all those involved and helps breed innovation, confidence and growth.
